In The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe, Tony Stark ends up in charge of a mysterious machine that Doreen, our beloved Squirrel Girl, falls into. And then two Squirrel Girls come out.
TWO. SQUIRREL GIRLS.
That’s right, y’all, this is an evil twin book! Or as Doreen finds, a cool regular type twin who also likes to kick butts and eat nuts. And makes life so much easier and more awesome. But of course, things can’t always remain that simple. (Are you really surprised?)
Unlike other Squirrel Girl volumes, this is a single self-contained story, and it’s a freakin’ delight. Like the title says, Squirrel Girl pretty much beats up the entire Marvel universe, so you get cameos from a lot of your favorite Marvel heroes. And while Squirrel Girl does love to punch, she’s not always known for being violent in the course of solving crimes. But I did mention an evil twin earlier, so… take from that what you will. And of course, it has the signature Squirrel Girl/Ryan North humor which makes everything so charming and lovely and awesome.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Squirrel Girl is one of my favorite heroes right now. Every book of hers that I read is just as fantastic as the one before, and now that they will finally be bringing her to the screen in Marvel’s New Warriors, played by Milana Vayntrub, I hope even more people will join the Squirrel Squad.
This is a great place to introduce people to Squirrel Girl if they haven’t already been reading the comics. A delightful, single story, graphic novel with BFFs and tons of Marvel characters and unconventional problem solving and mysterious machine twin? This girl gives it two butt-kicking, nut-eating, squirrel thumbs up.
